About Northern Pike

The scientific name for this type of fish is Esox Lucius, but don't worry, everyone around here just calls them northern pike! The world record was a 55-pound, 1-ouncer caught in Lake Grefreern, Germany, in 1986. The sides of the northern pike vary from dark green to olive green to brown, with gold flecks and seven to nine rows of yellowish to whitish, bean-shaped spots. The underside is white or cream-coloured. Set far back on the body, the dorsal and anal fins are greenish to reddish with irregular black marks. In general, the tips of the tail fin on a northern pike are more rounded than that of the muskie. In Ontario, pikes are caught through spring, summer, fall, and continue to be caught through the ice during the winter months. They are an aggressive fish and are a lot of fun to catch.

Northern Pike Fishing Tips

  • Northern pike are voracious feeders and take just about every kind of live and artificial bait, including very large streamer flies. They aren’t selective when it comes to live bait and you can use chubs and shiners.
  • Suggested lures are spoons, bucktail spinner, crankbaits, topwater lures, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits for trolling or casting.
  • Northern pike love the quiet vegetation of Ontario lakes, and our exclusive outpost lakes offer great weedy bays and shallow waters for spring and summer fishing as well as deeper fishing spots for autumn, when the pike move further into the lake to stay warm.
  • Be careful when attempting to remove a hook, pike have razor-sharp teeth.
